What Does It Mean To Be OEKO-TEX Certified?

The best-known label for textiles tested for harmful substances is The Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX. When a brand carries this label on its products, you can be certain that every component of the product has been tested for harmful substances (source: OEKO-TEX). We are happy to say that here at Terrera, we carry the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification proudly - where every stitch, button, and zipper are free from harmful substances.

What is OEKO-TEX?

What is OEKO-TEX?

Founded in 1992, OEKO-TEX is a third-party certification that works to verify that a product has been tested for chemicals that are harmful to humans and/or our ecosystem. Through increased product safety, improved sustainable production, and a sustainable, transparent value-creation chair, their mission is to create trust in textiles and leather in their production (source: OEKO-TEX). OEKO-TEX works to confirm other companies products are safe and free from harmful chemicals, and therefore, harmless to health, through their certifications.

There are currently six different labels that a product or material can earn from OEKO-TEX. Each one has its own set of specific criteria. All of Terrera’s materials and final products have earned the Standard-100 certification by OEKO-TEX.

Most commonly seen on products is the Standard 100 certification. This certifies that the product - every component of it - has been tested for harmful substances. Essentially, any item that carries this label has been proven harmless to human health. To be certified, the items are tested on the basis of the OEKO-TEX criteria catalog. In this test, they account for both regulated and non-regulated substances. In many cases, the limit values for the Standard 100 go beyond national and international requirements (source: OEKO-TEX). The criteria catalog used for the test is updated at least once a year and expanded with new scientific knowledge, giving consumers and manufacturers the reassurance and confidence that the products they are buying/producing are safe.
