Terrera's Sustainable Measures

Terrera opened its doors in 2007 - a time when sustainable sourcing was new in the Canadian fashion industry. Our founders wanted to create environmentally conscious clothing that would fit and flatter all women. We wanted to take a moment to highlight the measures in which Terrera takes as a sustainable company.

1. Earth-Friendly Fibres

Earth-friendly fibres

We believe that earth is a gift, given to us to be cherished. And so, all of our textiles are more sustainable than conventional counterparts. In all of our products, we include certified organic bamboo and/or organic cotton fabrics. Both our clothing and home products, including every thread, button, stitching, and fabric dyes, are free of harmful substances and have the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. Our dyes are low-impact, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. They contain no toxic chemicals or mordants and require less rinsing and overall water usage. Our OCIA certified organic viscose from bamboo is grown without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Through organic farming, we can naturally sustain soil health, prevent water contamination, reduce the use of toxins and chemicals, and build biologically rich agriculture. We use a ‘closed-loop’ process to recycle water and recapture the chemicals used to process the bamboo. A closed-loop process is important to help reduce the amount of water being used for dying the fabrics by recycling the used water, as well as recapturing the chemicals used to process the bamboo so they do not end up in our ecosystems.

2. Conscious Production

Conscious production - workers in a clothing factory checking fabric

We care for everyone involved with producing our clothing - from the farms, to the mills, to the factories. We seek to build long-term relationships with our partners so that we can grow together and sustain the livelihoods of all people. All of our overseas factory partners in China are audited to ensure that they exceed national standards for health and safety, workplace conditions, and workers’ protection. Once the pieces are ready, we slowly ship them by sea to Canada to reduce our ecological footprint.

3. Eco-Friendly Packaging

Each of our items are shipped consciously with our compostable packaging! Other brands on the market use single-use plastics for their products, but we wanted to change that. The opaque bags that your garments are wrapped in can be reused as compost bags for food, gardening, you name it. Our tags are made of cardboard and are pinned onto clothing using safety pins. You can reuse the safety pins and recycle the cardboard tags!

Here at Terrera, we’re continually sourcing other Earth-friendly fabrications to include in our brand.
