Our Sustainability Milestones

Today is World Environment Day. Since 1974, the United Nations has been calling for action, engaging governments, businesses, and citizens to join together and act on a pressing environmental issue. This year’s theme is biodiversity. According to the UN, “Recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States and Australia, to locust infestations across East Africa - and now, a global disease pandemic - demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life in which they exist.” To live in harmony with nature, we must commit to reverse the negative impacts of biodiversity loss and to restore life.

At LNBF, we believe that earth is a gift, given to us to be protected and cherished. As a clothing brand, we recognize that we must take necessary steps to be the positive change in a traditionally polluting industry. While we are not perfect, we continually seek ways to grow and improve. Here are some of the things we’ve been implementing:

1. More Sustainable Fabrics

We use and continually source more sustainable fabrics for our clothing and bedding products that use less water, fertilizers, pesticides and energy to grow. Our current fabrics include organic bamboo, a resilient and regenerative plant that does not require pesticides or irrigation. Our organic cotton is responsibly grown with natural seeds and pesticide-free soils, and limits the use of toxic bleaches, dyes and other chemical inputs during the growing and production process.

2. Low-Impact Dyes

We use low-impact dyes that are classified by Oeko-Tex Standard 100 as environmentally friendly. In order to meet the Oeko-Tex 100 standards, we ensure that our dyes have no toxic chemicals or mordants; no heavy metals and carcinogens; and no substances that can cause allergic reactions. The dyes that we use consume much less water than regular, non-certified dyes and have a high absorption rate. This means that our dyeing process needs little rinsing and we can complete our rinse at low temperatures. We also use a closed loop water system to ensure that our water is recycled.

3. Reducing Carbon Footprint via Slow Shipping

From the farms, to the mills, to the factories, we create each item of clothing in the same region to reduce the ecological impact of shipping materials from one country to another. Once the pieces are ready, we slowly ship them by sea to Canada.

4. Introducing Biodegradable/Recycled Packaging

This Fall, we are very excited to introduce fully-compostable biodegradable bags to package and ship our clothing. In addition, we currently use recycled cardboard and paper to carefully wrap your clothing and bedding products for shipment. We continue to work towards the goal of eliminating plastic from our production.

5. Supporting Local Environmental Causes

Each year, we recognize outstanding Canadian women who are actively engaged in environmental and community leadership. This year, we are supporting the winner with a $1000 grant for a community initiative, project, social-enterprise, or business that is making a positive impact on society and the environment. Do you know someone eligible? Share and invite them to apply. For details, visit: https://lnbf.ca/pages/2020-lnbf-earth-award

We thank our community for your ongoing support of our sustainable milestones and we only hope to continue diligently in our efforts to make this world a better, cleaner place for our future generation.

With Love,

- The LNBF Team
