Introducing Terrera's 2024 Earth Award Winner: Nicole!

Another year of our Earth Award has come to a close! We are truly thankful to all the amazing women who applied for our annual Earth Award. After reviewing the incredible projects, we were left inspired by so many. One in particular stood out to us - her hard work, years of experience, and dedication to better the environment amazed us. Meet Nicole, the owner of 'Streak of Green' hair salon located in Thunder Bay and our winner for the 2024 Terrera Earth Award. With over 26 years of experience in the hairdressing field and having opened her own salon 15 years ago, Nicole knew she found her destiny. She strives to make a difference in her community and the environment by creating an eco-friendly experience at her salon, Streak of Green.

About Streak of Green

Nicole is making a significant impact in the beauty industry with her intentions since opening her salon. As her slogan goes, she wanted to create harmony between the Earth and hair. Nicole worked hard to source products that have the same values to help reduce the exposure of harsh chemicals typically found in hair care products. Her eco-friendly salon not only uses safe products, she also strives to recycle all waste products from the salon properly, including cut hair, PPE, extra colour, used foils, plastics, and other materials. For the items that cannot be recycled in Thunder Bay, Nicole goes the extra mile by sending them to facilities that can handle proper recycling. Everything that Nicole purchases and does at her salon always has the environment in mind. From recycling, to energy-efficient tools, to avoiding aerosol products, Nicole strives to reduce waste and toxins in the beauty industry in every way she can at Streak of Green.

How the $1000 Earth Award Grant will be Utilized

Since purchasing the building where Streak of Green is currently located just over 5 years ago, Nicole has been busier than ever. Due to COVID-19 shutdowns and personal life events, she wasn't able to afford the building's much-needed makeover, particularly the front entrance space. Nicole plans to tackle the front entryway herself, replacing walls, removing shelving, and adding fresh paint and flooring to create a beautiful, welcoming space. She also plans to partner with Firefly Farm, a local business, to help sell locally grown, organic, and pesticide-free flowers. The space will also be updated to perfectly accommodate and display these beautiful blooms.

Nicole's commitment to partnering with the local community, recycling, reducing waste, and minimizing toxin exposure is a significant advancement in the beauty industry! As a women-owned business ourselves, our team at Terrera truly appreciates Nicole's hard work in running her own business while also caring for the environment and community. As Nicole continues to update her beautiful salon, we wish her congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
